A prayer for the humbling reception of what we didn’t earn.
O Grace, you toppler of ego. You wrench in the spokes of fear with your embarrassing insistence on undeserved gifts: Drive far from us the urge to earn our own way with cleverness and efficiency and sheer grit. That having noticed how we never actually keep up with, well, anything, we may settle down to the generally narrow scope of our own business — doing it well — and try not to be offended by our need for you.
O Grace, drive far from us the pointless and exhausting urge to earn what you love to give for free.
